A 16th-century Ottoman bath in Istanbul has reopened to the public following a 13-year restoration project. The Zeyrek Çinili Hamam is one of Istanbul’s landmark heritage sites. Built between 1530 and 1540 it offers unique bathing rituals. The opulent interiors, which date back almost 500 years, were originally designed by Mimar Sinan and commissioned by Hayreddin Barbarossa, the Grand Admiral of the Ottoman Navy. Sinan is renowned for creating Istanbul’s Suleymaniye Mosque. The bathing experience now combines traditional Ottoman rituals with contemporary art and design, following restoration by the Marmara Group. Zeyrek Çinili offers guests personalised therapies that reflect the ancient communal hammam ritual. These include marble therapy, traditional scrubs by hammam therapists (natır for women and tellak for men) and foam massage. There are a variety of signature bathing experiences lasting from 25 to 100 minutes.

Know before you go to the Zeyrek Çinili Hamam

• There are some strict hamam rules to be followed. For example, there is no mixing of the sexes. Either the Turkish bath has 2 sections (1 for each sex), or it admits men and women at different times of the day
• Men usually completely strip and wear nothing underneath the bath wrap. Women, on the other hand, typically keep their underwear on (but often not their bra) underneath the bath wrap. The choice is yours
• Zeyrek Çinili Hamami is open Tuesday to Sunday from 8 am to 8 pm.
• The masseur and scrubber will be the same sex as you are
• Standard soap is used. If you have sensitive skin or are allergic to some products, bring your soap
• Advance booking is always advisable
• The tip is normally 10-20 per cent of the total amount

Access to the men’s and women’s sections will rotate, allowing everyone to appreciate these newly uncovered details.

Prepare to leave the chaos and humdrum of life behind as soon as you enter the Turkish bath. Immerse yourself and embrace traditional custom by wearing the waistcloth and clogs provided.

Not quite for the faint-hearted, inside the temperature can reach up to 50 degrees Celcius under the central dome of the building.

The combined intense heat and humidity encourage the pores to open and impurities to be extracted from the body.

Following this, your skin will be gently exfoliated with a Turkish scrub and you will receive a soothing soap massage.

Finally, after resting, you can enjoy Turkish tea before being taken back to your hotel feeling relaxed, rejuvenated and refreshed.

About Zeyrek Çinili Hamam: The ancient communal Hamam ritual

There are a variety of signature bathing experiences lasting from 25 to 100 minutes. The hamam custom dates back two millennia and is known for its cleansing, purification and healing benefits.
Zeyrek Çinili Hamam is a double bath, with one section originally designated for men and the other for women, each with a unique design. Restorers have uncovered fragments of intricate Iznik tiles and hidden Byzantine cisterns, dating back to the 5th century AD.

Modern rituals in a traditional setting.

The Original is a modern interpretation of the centuries-old hammam ritual. Beginning with warm marble therapy, guests relax on the central stone (known as göbektaşı), under a starry dome.

Hammam therapists then care for each guest individually, scrubbing the skin, before a foam massage and hair-washing ritual using local natural products.
