The Turkish bath is a long-revered custom, centuries old; perfect for those looking for a truly physical and spiritual cleansing experience.
The Hurrem Sultan Hamam, built by Sinan the Architect in 1556 in the name of Hürrem Sultan, who was the wife of Süleyman the Magnificent, the Hamam is an exceptional piece of architecture with two domes and sections for men and women on the same 75-meter long axis.

Not quite for the faint-hearted, inside the temperature can reach up to 50 degrees Celsius under the central dome of the building.

About Hürrem Sultan Hamamı
This meticulously restored twin hamam dating to 1556 offers the most luxurious traditional bath experience in the Old City. Designed by Mimar Sinan, it was built just across the road from Aya Sofya by order of Süleyman the Magnificent and named in honour of his wife Hürrem Sultan, commonly known as Roxelana. The Haseki Hurrem Sultan Hamam is located in Sultanahmet Square between the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia.
The building’s three-year, US$13 million restorations, completed in 2011, were closely monitored by heritage authorities and the end result is wonderful: it retains Sinan’s austere design but endows it with understated modern luxury. There are separate baths for males and females, both with a handsome soğukluk (entrance vestibule) surrounded by wooden change cubicles.
The baths have separate sections for men and women and were constructed on the same axis, as mirror images of each other. The cold room dome is an impressive 26 meters high.
Treatments are expert and the surrounds are exceptionally clean. 45-minute bath treatment costs €80 and includes a scrub and soap massage, olive-oil soap and a personal kese (coarse cloth mitten used for exfoliation).

Beautiful experience in the heart of the Old Town What a beautiful way to end my short stay in Istanbul by combining history, traditions and indulgence. I arrived early after a visit to the Basilica Cistern and was able to secure one of the last appointments for a bath. It was my first visit to a Hammam and my therapist Asumon took such good care of me ensuring I felt relaxed and nurtured throughout. Plenty of time to enjoy the surrounds post bath. My money was stolen at the Hurrem Sultan Hamam. My friend and I visited the hamam in October 2026. We didn't use the safe and left our purse in a locked locker with a code I made up. When I returned, I discovered all the money was gone: 100 euros, 100 dollars, and 3,000 lira. The hotel management insists I lost it somewhere else, or it was stolen somewhere else, or I didn't have any money at all. They don't have CCTV, so there's no way to prove I had the money. TH35USNH20 October 2026Totally worth it I was really looking forward to this unique Turkish spa experience and opted for the premier level. Semra was my therapist and was amazing. English is limited and I don’t speak Turkish, but it was fine. I did use the salt scrub when I was not supposed to, so when they tell you to bathe yourself, they mean you should only clean your body with water and the bowl they provide. The salt scrub was meant for my hands, so because I misunderstood, I did not have that experience (i.e., salt hand scrub). I typically have a hard time relaxing though I often get massages and usually 90 min to 2 hours, which forces me to relax. Coming here I immediately felt relaxed and calm and thought the entire experience was longer than it was, so I feel that I definitely got my money’s worth. Also I was presented with fresh coffee and a tray of fresh fruits and a small bowl of premium dried fruits and nuts. It was actually too much food for me, so I nibbled. I enjoyed the whole experience solo and would definitely do it again. When I spoke to my work colleagues about theirs (they went to another highly rated hammam), they said they only did the 60 min treatment and they felt rushed and that it was less than 60 min. As I said above, mine felt much longer. If you try hammam, I highly recommend Hurrem and splurge on yourself with the most expensive service they offer. When you are being pampered at this historic hamami you can imagine women centuries ago relaxing on the warm marble, looking up at the sky through the same little windows. It really is a perfectly beautiful space. The masseuses are so friendly and take such good care of you! They guide you through the process even if you don’t speak the same language. The bubble massage is such a treat and takes place within the center of the warm marble room. Then you have a massage if you choose and finally relax and drink tea in the lounge chairs. You are asked if you would like a light, medium or hard massage and I chose medium. It was a perfect combination - relaxing but not painful at all. My husband and I were a bit timid but both felt we needed to try this tradition. The men and women have separate entrances and do not see one another until exiting the building. The staff were wonderful and provide everything you need (disposable g-string, peshtemel towel and slides). My attendant, Dilek, was very kind. She treated me so nicely and made me relax. I send her many sweet wishes! The Hammam is stunning and you leave shining like a new penny. I kept getting a whiff of the soap or shampoo/conditioner for the rest of the day. Melissa S4 October 2026High Marks for this Centrally Located Hammam The hamam has separate entries for men and women. Inside and outside is very clean and inviting. The hosts invited us in and gave simple instructions for the lockers and where to go after we changed clothes. They provide towels, shoes, lotion and disposable underwear (required). We had our massages in the evening, and it was practically a private affair. After many days of walking and touring, I recommend doing this before returning to your home. The price for the treatments was fair. Scrubbing is hard work! The gal who worked with me, Yasam - was delightful and helpful throughout, and my friends enjoyed their hosts too. One caveat - I have experienced other hammams and was really looking forward to the heated marble in the center. (Which is my favorite part.) Apparently, past guests complained that it is too hot, so they don't heat it anymore. It was disappointing, but the overall experience was still positive despite it. After the scrubbing and bathing, we were nestled into our towels and escorted to the relaxing area. There is a large water fountain in the middle of the room and comfortable benches with cushions and pillows. We were served a delicious pomegranate juice concoction and hot Turkish tea paired with lokum (Turkish Delight). A shout out to Lila for her welcome. The setting is beautiful — right in Sultanahmet, between Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque. Knowing that the hamam dates back to the 1500s is amazing. The treatment itself was wonderful. It started with a traditional full-body scrub, followed by relaxing on the warm marble slab for the foam ritual. I was covered in lovely warm, fluffy bubbles and had a full-body foam massage, followed by a head and neck massage. Asuman was so good at applying the right amount of pressure. The treatment finished with a hair wash using a gorgeous lilac-scented shampoo. The pressure throughout was just right — thorough and invigorating without being too vigorous. I came away feeling incredibly clean, relaxed and very pampered. It was a lovely combination of experiencing a piece of Istanbul's history while also having some much-needed relaxation. I booked my spa for the last evening of my 2 week trip to Greece and Turkey and it completely revived my body and spirit. The lady took me by the arm, left me for 10 minutes so I could relax and put water on my body, came in very quickly put on a body mask, then left again for 10 minutes, presumably for it to dry a bit and then she kept pouring water over me to get them clay off, and then she spend time cleaning the floors, etc. and then she did a quick bubble massage, and again spend time cleaning the floor. There was a lot of water just dumped over me and a lot of noise from that which was echoing in the chamber. So overall, not a pleasant experience. On a return trip to Istanbul I wanted to try a different hammam; a friend suggested this one (thanks Duygu!). I had the Ab-i Hayat treatment which came with a private dressing room (with lock). The hammam is clean, bright and beautiful. It was, after all, built for a queen. Buket guided me through the experience and took excellent care of me. After the scrub, clay, and bath, I rested with a plate of fruit, cheese and Turkish Delight, sipping on a warm cup of tea before my massage. My skin felt so good afterward! The gift bag was a nice touch, the highlight of which was a lovely fringed peshtemal (among other items). Real talk: no, it's not cheap. But it is definitely worth every penny. I'm worth it and so are you. Needless to say I'd definitely return and will recommend Hürrem Sultan to others visiting Istanbul. And we’re so glad we did. We arrived a few minutes early, so we got to sit in the shower area for a little extra time, relaxing. The whole experience was amazing from beginning to end. It’s quite a bit different than a massage in the US. Even though the actual massage time was only 30 minutes it was long enough. Our services were with Yasam and Semra. I was led to a private changing room and felt like a truly special guest from start to finish. You’re paired with one specialist who stays with you the entire time. I was lucky enough to have Serkan. We began in a beautiful marble washing area with gold faucets, where I used a golden bowl to pour warm water over myself again and again. From there: a lavender salt scrub with a traditional loofah, a full mud treatment, several rinses, and a massage on a warm marble table covered in inches of foam. Then more washing, a hair wash and scalp massage, and a towel-dry before being wrapped up for a relaxing break with nuts, blackberry juice, and dried fruit. The experience finished with a Swedish-style massage using a wonderful lotion, while I wore a collagen mask that left my skin so refreshed I I wonder if I still match my passport picture and I’m going to have trouble getting out of here.
