The Turkish bath is a long-revered custom, centuries old; perfect for those looking for a truly physical and spiritual cleansing experience.
The Hurrem Sultan Hamam, built by Sinan the Architect in 1556 in the name of Hürrem Sultan, who was the wife of Süleyman the Magnificent, the Hamam is an exceptional piece of architecture with two domes and sections for men and women on the same 75-meter long axis.
Prepare to leave the chaos and humdrum of life behind as soon as you enter the Turkish bath. Immerse yourself and embrace traditional custom by wearing the waist-cloth and clogs provided.
Not quite for the faint-hearted, inside the temperature can reach up to 50 degrees Celsius under the central dome of the building.
The combined intense heat and humidity encourage the pores to open and impurities to be extracted from the body.
Following this, your skin will be gently exfoliated with a Turkish scrub and you will receive a soothing soap massage.

About Hürrem Sultan Hamamı
This meticulously restored twin hamam dating to 1556 offers the most luxurious traditional bath experience in the Old City. Designed by Mimar Sinan, it was built just across the road from Aya Sofya by order of Süleyman the Magnificent and named in honour of his wife Hürrem Sultan, commonly known as Roxelana. The Haseki Hurrem Sultan Hamam is located in Sultanahmet Square between the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia.
The building’s three-year, US$13 million restorations, completed in 2011, were closely monitored by heritage authorities and the end result is wonderful: it retains Sinan’s austere design but endows it with understated modern luxury. There are separate baths for males and females, both with a handsome soğukluk (entrance vestibule) surrounded by wooden change cubicles.
The baths have separate sections for men and women and were constructed on the same axis, as mirror images of each other. The cold room dome is an impressive 26 meters high.
Treatments are expert and the surrounds are exceptionally clean. 45-minute bath treatment costs €80 and includes a scrub and soap massage, olive-oil soap and a personal kese (coarse cloth mitten used for exfoliation).

Not a relaxing experience There was nothing relaxing about the experience. The lady took me by the arm, left me for 10 minutes so I could relax and put water on my body, came in very quickly put on a body mask, then left again for 10 minutes, presumably for it to dry a bit and then she kept pouring water over me to get them clay off, and then she spend time cleaning the floors, etc. and then she did a quick bubble massage, and again spend time cleaning the floor. There was a lot of water just dumped over me and a lot of noise from that which was echoing in the chamber. So overall, not a pleasant experience. On a return trip to Istanbul I wanted to try a different hammam; a friend suggested this one (thanks Duygu!). I had the Ab-i Hayat treatment which came with a private dressing room (with lock). The hammam is clean, bright and beautiful. It was, after all, built for a queen. Buket guided me through the experience and took excellent care of me. After the scrub, clay, and bath, I rested with a plate of fruit, cheese and Turkish Delight, sipping on a warm cup of tea before my massage. My skin felt so good afterward! The gift bag was a nice touch, the highlight of which was a lovely fringed peshtemal (among other items). Real talk: no, it's not cheap. But it is definitely worth every penny. And we’re so glad we did. We arrived a few minutes early, so we got to sit in the shower area for a little extra time, relaxing. The whole experience was amazing from beginning to end. It’s quite a bit different than a massage in the US. Even though the actual massage time was only 30 minutes it was long enough. Our services were with Yasam and Semra. Both were very professional, attentive, and use just the right amount of pressure. My skin has never felt so clean, smooth and moisturized. It was a fabulous experience. The building is comfortable and filled with marble, pillows, tea, friendly faces, and every comfort. The details and level of attention are what set this apart from other hammams. You get changed and are offered a place to keep valuables. Nihan then helped wash and rinse with water before then scrubbing the body to exfoliate. You move to a marble slab to lay on where you then get the most amazing scented aromatherapy bubble bath. 🫧This is massaged into your skin and then you get rinsed and moved to a room where your hair is washed and conditioned. This is not done at all hammams. We then relaxed with tea and Turkish delight and then went for our massage with oils to condition and smooth the skin in another area upstairs. I’d never experienced anything like this before From the moment I arrived, it felt like a first-class experience. The facility is stunning — marble everywhere, and kept warm enough that you can walk around comfortably in just your shorts. I was led to a private changing room and felt like a truly special guest from start to finish. You’re paired with one specialist who stays with you the entire time. I was lucky enough to have Serkan. We began in a beautiful marble washing area with gold faucets, where I used a golden bowl to pour warm water over myself again and again. From there: a lavender salt scrub with a traditional loofah, a full mud treatment, several rinses, and a massage on a warm marble table covered in inches of foam. Then more washing, a hair wash and scalp massage, and a towel-dry before being wrapped up for a relaxing break with nuts, blackberry juice, and dried fruit. The experience finished with a Swedish-style massage using a wonderful lotion, while I wore a collagen mask that left my skin so refreshed I I wonder if I still match my passport picture and I’m going to have trouble getting out of here. I’d specifically request Serkan again. He’s warm, positive, and has eight years of experience that really shows — he explained everything he was doing and why, so I never felt rushed or confused. He’s simply a kind, generous person whose whole focus for those two hours was making me feel, in his words, “like a Sultan.” I left with a parting gift of olive oil soap and a handmade traditional Turkish cotton towel. My husband and I took the bath in separate areas for men and women. We met up afterwards in the hamam's outdoor area, which was beautiful and comfortable. My therapist was Semia; she provided a kit with everything I needed (slippers, a towel, moisturizer, shampoo, etc.). The changing room—while shared—offered plenty of privacy and was stocked with essentials like a hair dryer, hairbrush, and cotton swabs. The bath itself was excellent and very relaxing, featuring the exfoliation and foam wash typical of a classic hamam. Overall it was good, because the staff who taking care of us was great. Mrs. Kevser was with me all the time and she was real professional. Condiments was pretty enough, you don't need to bring anything with you. Prices for 80 mins is too much, time pressure gives us a little ick. And hot stone wasn't hot enough. After the session, i forgot my gold ring at hammam. I called them back and the stuff was very helpful , they found the ring. There were a few other bathers but the Hammam was a haven of calm. The atmosphere was peaceful and elegant. The staff (all female) were so friendly and welcoming, and utterly professional. Zeliş was amazing - I requested a firm massage, which she absolutely delivered, my shoulders haven’t felt this relaxed in years! The package lasted 2hours and didn’t feel remotely rushed, despite the extensive list of treatments we received. We were provided with a towel, robe & slippers (not provided with every package) and disposable thong to wear - the majority of the time is spent naked apart from the thong, which some may not feel comfortable with, but it was quite liberating/refreshing! The secure private changing rooms were a bonus - we were able to leave our clothes, bags and jewellery (would advise you take off any metal due to the heat, and to make the most of the treatments) and the room was stocked with makeup remover, body lotion, hair brush, cotton buds etc - everything you could need. Compared to a spa in the uk, this felt well worth the money - the staff were engaged and charming despite us being treated towards the end of their day, and I am just looking for an excuse to return.
